Cliffhanger Studio · DON'T OPEN THE DOOR

Part 1 of 5The Alert

Your phone screams at 9:14 PM. It says: stay inside. Don't answer the door. Even to a voice you recognize.

So you lock the door. You put the chain on. Twice, just to hear it click.

You count your food. 39 cans. 3 gallons of water. You live alone. That's enough for a while.

Is it, though? Most people don't know this. Ready dot gov says one gallon per person, per day. And in the heat, you can need double. So three gallons is three days. Maybe less.

You pull the blinds. Every porch light on the street is off. Every one but yours.

At 11:52, someone knocks.

Then a voice. Your mom's voice. Honey, it's Mom. Let me in. It's so cold out here.

She knows your nickname. She knows your dog's name. She asks if that's a new chain on the door. You never told anyone about the chain.

But your mom lives four hundred miles away. And right then, your phone buzzes. A text. From Mom.

The knocking stops. And the voice says, very calmly: open the door.

What do you do?
  1. Stay silent
  2. Ask what only Mom knows
  3. Look through the peephole
